The only light in the room was from the sun coming up outside, and when I laid her on the bed, it shone on her thighs. I wanted to see her naked, but I didn’t have the patience to take off her dress. Not now. But I had enough patience to simply watch her for one second as I propped one knee on the bed, taking in the rise and fall of her chest, her slightly parted lips.

Her hands were crossed on top of her stomach, and she was fiddling with her thumbs. My girl was nervous.

“Lift your dress up higher, Brooke.”

She immediately reached to the fabric, pulling it upward a few inches.

“Higher.”

She obliged, lifting it until I could see the silk of her panties.

“Now, spread wide for me.”

She opened up, and I kneeled between her thighs. I was so greedy for her that I couldn’t decide where to start kissing. Where to start touching. I started kissing that illuminated patch of skin, barely touching my lips to her inner thigh. Her ragged breath filled the room.

“Figures,” she mumbled, more to herself.

“Figures what?”

“That you like to work out.” She pointed at my chest, then promptly dropped her hand, as if just realizing what she’d done.

I smiled lazily. “Oh, yeah? You like… the package, Val?”

“I’m trying to decide if my honesty will go to your head.”

I laughed, and Val playfully slapped my shoulder.  

“Well, you probably own a mirror, and you see what I see, so there’s no reason for me to be dishonest.”

Despite knowing it wasn’t the smartest thing, I leaned closer.

“I want to hear you say it, Valentina.”

She narrowed her eyes, as if weighing the pros and cons.

“No, I don’t think I will. Too much self-confidence is as bad as no confidence. It’s what my dad used to say. He was Irish and tried to pass all sorts of weird sayings as old Irish proverbs, but my friend Google disagrees. I think Dad just made them up. But I like them.”

She relaxed—until I moved even closer. “Don’t think I’m letting you off the hook about the other thing.”

Val licked her lips, then shrugged one shoulder playfully. “Suit yourself. I can’t be pressured.”

I wiggled my eyebrows. “No, but I bet you can be… persuaded.”

“By you?”

“Obviously.”

“Mmmm… I don’t think so, Mr. Sloane. You lack the proper persuasion tools.”

That was a sweet challenge.

“And what might those be?”

“Think I’m gonna make it easy for you?”

“Give me a hint.”

Val spoke the next words with utmost seriousness. “Well, bribery works better than persuasion, if I’m honest. If my sisters are to be believed, I can be talked into crazy things whenever there is ice cream involved. I, on the other hand, can convince them to do crazy things with my famous cheesecake.”

Noted.

“I have other persuasion tools.”

“Such as?”

I lowered my gaze to her mouth, keeping it there until she darted out the tip of her tongue, wetting her lips.

She flexed her back and wobbled backward a little. I brought a hand to her arm to stabilize her, afraid she’d land in the fountain otherwise. She looked up at me from under those long lashes, and I didn’t even register moving my hand from her arm to cup her face, resting my thumb just under her mouth. She parted her lips, releasing a shaky exhale, and I couldn’t stay away anymore. I closed the distance between us and spoke against her lips.

“I’m going to kiss you, Valentina.”

When she gave me a low moan as an answer, I crushed my mouth to hers. I slid my hand to the back of her head. When I sucked a little on her tongue, she groaned right into my mouth.

With my free hand, I drew her closer. I needed more than her lips. I wanted the warmth of her body, to feel her sweet curves. No, that was a mistake… because now that she was pressed against me, I became greedier still, wanting to feel her skin. I lost all sense of space and time, right until I realized she was whispering my name. Then I pulled her in my lap, moving my hands up her legs.

Her skin broke out in goose bumps. When I moved past her knees, her hips slid forward an inch. When I cupped her ass, my fingers didn’t encounter fabric, and for a split second, I thought she wasn’t wearing panties. At the thought of her bare, I nearly lost my mind.

"Do you know how hard it was to stay away from you tonight, Lori?"

I sucked in a breath.

I couldn't form an answer. All thoughts fled me. All my muscles were strung tight. He brought one hand to my belly, and I knew he could feel the tension coiled in my body.

I spent half the day with my ass up in the air, walking along the horizontal base the guys dug for the timber pole, checking it was the right width and depth. The smell of freshly turned earth filled my nostrils. I stopped and took out my earbuds around midday, when Sevi and Jacob went on their lunch break. My ears popped a little. In the eerie silence, Landon’s voice echoed through the yard.

“No, we agreed on the KPI targets already. There’s no negotiating now.”

I groaned. It was my second day on my spy job, and I was already failing. How long had he been working?

I laid down my hand trowel and skittered to the porch to police Landon. He was sitting at the wooden picnic table, deep lines marring his forehead, his jaw set. I moved until I was right in front of him, placed my hands on my hips, and narrowed my eyes, giving him my most stern, no-nonsense look, which had the unexpected effect of making him grin.

“I’ll call you back later,” he said into the phone, then clicked off.

“What do you mean, I’ll call you later? I believe you meant ‘I will not be calling you over the next two weeks. Forget I exist.’”

Landon shrugged, his grin still in place. “I relaxed all morning. I thought I’d take a break from taking a break during lunch.”

“Val was right. You really don’t know how to vacation, do you?”

“I’m out of practice, that’s all. I have a competent team, and an acting CEO I’d trust with my life, but it’s hard to disconnect.”

“Well, I suppose business empires aren’t built by taking vacations often. When’s the last time you had a proper vacation?”

“Four years ago.”

His answer tugged at a memory. Val had told me Landon’s wife died four years ago. Now I understood Val’s determination to make sure he relaxed. I was determined not to fail at my spy job again.

“Are you eating lunch with your crew?” he asked.

“No, I don’t eat lunch.”

He drummed his finger on the wooden table. “Why not?”

“I mostly forget. It’s inconvenient eating on site. My hands are dirty, and packing lunch is a drag.”

My stomach churned loudly at that exact moment.

“Your stomach seems to disagree,” he said.

“It usually does.”

“Have lunch with me today. Come on, you’re starving.”

“The work won’t finish itself.”

“Maddie, you need to have lunch. And I’d love your company.”

Ah, his tone held that polite bossiness from the first day again, and poof, my resolve vanished.

“Oh, I don’t know. Even though, if I do eat with you, I might distract you from calling back your business partner.”

The corners of his lips twitched, as if he were laughing at a private joke.

Landon rose from the bench and motioned with his head toward the house. “By all means, go ahead and... distract me.”

The way he said it, in a lower, huskier tone, made it sound dirty. I parted my lips, exhaling. Was Landon flirting with me? Or was my mind playing tricks on me because I’d been perving at him since he arrived? That look he gave me earlier, though... I thought he’d been doing some perving too. In any case, the smart course of action was to remain outside, work through lunch.

Instead, I wanted to follow him inside. Everything about him beckoned to me; the pull I felt toward him was almost magnetic.
