“Your mother does know what size you wear, doesn’t she?” Addy asked the next morning as I walked out of the bathroom, showered and dressed for school.

Looking down at another version of the black long-sleeved shirt I’d worn the day before, I shook my head. “No,” I answered. “This is hers. Most of my clothes are. She always just gave me what she didn’t want anymore.”

Her eyes widened and then softened.

“Well, I meant what I said. I’m taking you into town this weekend. You’re too tiny to be wearing your mom’s hand-me-downs. She’s got to be at least two sizes bigger than you.”

Four sizes, but who is counting?

“Maybe, if I keep feeding you like this, you’ll actually grow some meat on those bones of yours,” she suggested, her keen eyes still fixated on my body.

It made me suddenly aware of the way my jeans felt so loose around my hips… how easily they fell from my body.

“You and me… we’re the same.”

The memory of his voice cut through my mind like a razor blade, and I instantly stiffened.

“Willow? You okay?” Addy noticed my change in mood almost instantly. She moved to my aid but stopped herself before her hand reached my shoulder. “Whatever is going through your mind right now, it will fade.”

“It won’t,” I said through clenched teeth. “It will never fade.”

“It will. Maybe not today or tomorrow, not even next year… but with time, it will fade. And it will heal.”

“You don’t know. You can’t—”

“Trust me,” was all she said before turning toward the door.

Read a Sneak Peek

My normally quiet nature seemed to take a backseat when it came to this guy. He made me angry, flustered, and… something else I couldn’t put my finger on.

Annoyed maybe?

No, that wasn’t it.

“What is your problem?” I blurted out, chasing behind him.

“My problem?” he asked, spinning around to face me.

Suddenly, he was too close. I could feel his breath on my face, his presence looming over me.

I took a step back.

He seemed to notice the unease settle around me, and a bit of the edge he carried chipped away.

His next words were said with a slightly softer quality. “Look, maybe we got off on the wrong foot. I didn’t mean to sound so harsh, but if the store doesn’t do well, it’s on me. My dad thinks it’s a waste of time.”

“And you don’t?”

I didn’t know what a rich, popular kid wanted with an old bookstore, but I kept my mouth shut.

He shrugged. “We have nothing in this crummy town, not even a movie theater. Last month, I wanted to see the new Marvel movie, and my friends and I had to drive thirty minutes away just to see it.”

“Haven’t you ever heard of Netflix?” I asked.

“It’s not the same as seeing it on the big screen.”

“I wouldn’t know,” I replied.

“What?” He grinned. “You’ve never been to a movie?”

The way he said it was meant as a joke, but all laughter died when I shook my head.

“Seriously?”

“I mean, I’ve watched several on TV but never at a theater,” I answered, not able to meet his stare.

“I thought you were from the city.”

My eyes flew up to his.

“Oh, so you really did think you were invisible. That doesn’t work around here, Mittens.”

My brows furrowed as I tried to figure out what he meant until he pointed to my gloves.

Mittens.

Cute.

“My name is Willow,” I corrected.

Sam just kept smiling.

“Word of advice, Mittens. The less you try to be invisible, the less interested people will be.”

I let out a heavy sigh, snatching the remainder of the books from the counter.

As he’d reminded me earlier, I wasn’t being paid to mess around.

And I sure as hell didn’t need life lessons from an over privileged daddy’s boy.

I hated this place.

"Where do you want to eat? I asked, looking around at several options.  It was a beautiful day, and there were a few places that offered outside dinning.  The smell from one of my favorite Italian bistros wafted over, luring me in that direction.

"I think you've already decided," he replied, seeing my feet already moving towards the heavenly scent of garlic and freshly baked bread. 

"I'm just looking," I stated, taking a few paces closer so I could peek at the menu.  It had been a while since I'd been here, and I wanted to make sure they still had one of my favorite items--eggplant parmesan.

A deep laugh had me halting in my tracks.

My eyes darted to the left and there he was, tucked in a corner table with a gorgeous blonde.  Even from this angle, I could see the designer labels I'd once become so familiar with adorning her from head to toe.  She was everything I was not. 

Everything he'd wanted me to be. 

Manicured, primped to perfection without a hair out of place, she was every man’s fantasy and sitting there together, they truly made the perfect couple.  He'd cut his hair short again, matching the razor edge precision of his tailored suit.  He screamed money and class and with her by his side, it was like the missing piece of the puzzle had finally been found. 

It shouldn't matter.

I shouldn't care.  But

 God, I did.

Look away, Everly.  Look away.

As if he heard the silent mantra screaming inside my head, his attention turned and his eyes slightly widened, his gaze colliding with mine. 

Time froze.  The world melted away and there was only him, me and the swirling sea of emotions swimming between us.  His jaw twitched, as my heart leapt into high gear.  And as quickly as he found me again, his eyes slid away like I never existed.

Like I'd never meant anything.

His focus returned to his date and I was left shaking like a leaf.

“Plans change—for better, for worse. We adapt. And all that matters is what’s in front of us.”

“And you have Ryan now,” I concluded.

“Yes.”

Silence followed us as we moved down the street past the old clubs and the dingy storefronts.

“Why do you want to know about the past—about us—so badly?” she blurted out as we reached my car. I turned to face her, and saw red blotches of anger tinting her face. I took a second or two to collect my thoughts before responding.

“Have you ever watched a mystery or a thriller type movie?”

“What?”

“You know, like Inception or Gone Girl? Where you just have no fucking clue what’s going on until the very end?”

“I know what type of movie you’re talking about. And no—not really, if you must know. I’m not a mystery lover—I always see the plot twists from a mile away. But what I don’t see is why you’re bringing up movies—right now!” she huffed.

“I’m trying to explain my answer. Would you just give me a second,” I answered gruffly.

She threw her arms across her chest, and I tried to ignore the way they pressed her breasts high and tight against her shirt. I decided to look at the stop sign across the street instead.

That was safer.

“Anyway, as I was saying—I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately—in an effort to discover the new me. Well, I’ve decided I hate thrillers and mysteries. The intense feeling of never knowing what is going on—that sick, twist-in-the-gut feeling of knowing there is something missing and you just don’t know what it is. I hate it—with a passion. That’s my life— all that damn time. Knowing there are clues and memories out there, within reach, but having no idea how to get to them.”

“Why do you need to know so badly? I mean, couldn’t you just start over new?” she asked softly.

“I tried. I am trying, but I’m always pulled back to this dark black hole of nothingness. I need to fill in the blanks. I need to make sure I don’t...”

“You don’t what?” she pressed.

“I don’t want to become that man again,” I confessed, turning toward her. Her hesitant eyes met mine, and she nodded.

“Then we keep going. One memory at a time.”

No smile of encouragement, no friendly good-bye as she turned toward her car, but she had given me the promise of more.

More time with her.

More memories of us, and more chances to change her mind.

She might never love me again, but maybe she’d find it in her heart to forgive the man I was trying to become.
