Review & Excerpt Tour for It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time by Kylie Scott

"Addictive like all Kylie Scott books, you'll swoon, laugh, ache, put your life on hold, and compulsively read until the wee hours of the night—only to reread the whole thing the next morning. Perfection!" - Katy Evans, New York Times bestselling author

Returning home for her father’s wedding was never going to be easy for Adele. If being sent away at eighteen hadn’t been bad enough, the mess she left behind when she made a pass at her dad’s business partner sure was.

Fifteen years older than her, Pete had been her crush for as long as she could remember. But she’d misread the situation—confusing friendliness for undying love. Awkward. Add her father to the misunderstanding, and Pete was left with a broken nose and a business on the edge of ruin. The man had to be just as glad as everyone else when she left town.

Seven years later, things are different. Adele is no longer a kid, but a fully grown adult more than capable of getting through the wedding and being polite. But all it takes is seeing him again to bring back those old feelings.

Sometimes first loves are the truest.

It was meant to be a soft kiss. A chaste one, even.

The minute my lips touched his, however, everything changed. Callused hands grabbed the sides of my face and my mouth opened on a gasp. His tongue swept inside, taking me over. Holy hell. Shoes and purse hit the floor, forgotten. Nothing about this kiss was slow or easy. The man devoured me. Every ounce of emotion poured into that kiss, all of the anger and frustration between us. His tongue was teasing and tasting, driving me wild. Then he drew back to suck and nip at my bottom lip. One hand slid around the back of my neck, the other over my hip to grab at my ass. His hold was firm, a little rough even. He treated my body like it belonged to him and I wasn’t gentle either.

Apparently experience mattered. Because all I could do was try and keep up.

I held on tight to his open shirt, straining against him, trying to get closer. I’d have crawled inside the man if I could. Turned out that under certain circumstances, the taste of scotch worked for me in a big way. Against my hip, his cock hardened, digging into me. And oh my God, I’d done that to him. Me. How amazing! Meanwhile, my body felt liquid, core aching and empty. I needed him inside of me and it seemed like I’d already been waiting forever.

“Pete. Please.”

“Fuck,” he muttered, breath hot against my ear.

I fumbled at the remaining buttons on his shirt. My damn fingers didn’t seem to be working. Easier to just push the whole thing upward. Luckily, the man decided to help, tearing the shirt off over his head. More skin was good. And he was so hot and smooth, a thrill to the touch. The solid flesh of his pecs and the flat plane of his stomach.

He tore at the zipper on the back of my dress, dragging fabric down over my shoulders. A growl came from the back of his throat, a noise of frustration, impatience. I’m reasonably certain I heard the silk rip. I didn’t care. His hands and mouth seemed to cover every bit of skin revealed, touching and tasting me everywhere. The dress got stuck on my hips. Out of the way enough for now.

He didn’t even bother undoing my bra, simply peeling down one of the lace cups to free my flesh. My breast filled his hot palm as it took the weight. Fingers plumped me, his thumb flicking over my hard nipple. The sting of pain followed by the heat of his kiss made my head spin and my body ache. There was no room for thought as he fed me deep, wet kisses. Slowly, he took us to the floor. No time for anything else. Just the urgent need to have him inside me.

The hardness of the polished wood was cool against my back. My legs were spread, his body between them. And with his broad chest above me, his weight taken on one arm, he was all I could see. I swear even the insides of my thighs were wet, I was so ready. It would have been embarrassing with anybody else. But this man, he had to know, he had to understand. It had always been him.

“Pete, I need—”

“I know,” he said, voice harsh and low.

Kim's 4 Star Review

It’s been seven years since Adele has seen her father, Andrew.  With his wedding just days away Adele finally returned home. The last time she visited him, she left a mess behind that included a huge misunderstanding with her friend Pete who also is her father’s business partner. Hoping that everyone can finally see her as a fully grown adult, she wants to get through the wedding with very little awkwardness and a whole lot of politeness.  Will being back bring up old feelings or will they be able to move on?

I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.

Adele spent most of her childhood going between her mother and father’s house.  She got to spend the summer with her father but since he was very business focused he had his friend Pete keep an eye on his daughter. What Andrew didn’t expect was how close these two would become.  After many summers spent together, Adele growing up but both Andrew and Pete didn’t see it. A fifteen year age difference should’ve deterred any crush that Adele might’ve developed however it didn’t.  Adele is a strong, independent woman who knows that she wants and took the steps to get it.  Failure and embarrassment may have sent her away but now that she’s back, she is doing her best to show how much she has changed and that she is an adult now.  Plans are good in theory but when Adele see’s Pete for the first time in seven years, the thoughts about him she had come flooding back.

Pete has worked hard to get where he is today.  He really doesn’t have any family around, as his father basically checked out after his mother passed away and his sister lives on the other side of Australia.  Andrew and Adele were as close as he had to family.  After Adele’s confession and Peter’s broken nose, things have gotten back on track.  With that his close friend and business partner Andrew is getting married, that means Andrew’s daughter Adele is coming back. Pete is a man who knows that he has issues but has found a way to avoid them.  He has stuck with causal relationships and he hasn’t changed since Adele left.

Adele and Pete have always had a special relationship, a connection that they don’t have with anyone else.  It started as a unique friendship. Pete was there for Adele when her father wasn’t and Adele was there and helped Pete keep his dates at arm’s length. Adele knew what Pete was doing when he brought her on his dates and even called him out on it, however she never put a stop to it.  After meeting Pete’s father just once she knew why Pete was so closed off.  The one thing about their friendship was that they could always talk to each other freely, even with the age difference.  Pete just had to make sure that he kept his talk’s age appropriate.

With Adele back, Pete has done his best to keep her at arm’s length.  Adele isn’t having anything to do with it as she had planned to try to be mature about the situation and move on.  After her father’s wedding is over, Adele talks to Pete about what his problem was.  What she didn’t expect was Pete confessing his attraction to her and how far he wants to take it. These two have a chemistry which is unlike anything I’ve read before.  Fighting it has been hard to do for both of them.

I first fell in love with Kylie’s writing when the Stage Dive series came out.  After reading the synopsis for this book, I just had to read it! The synopsis alone had me wanting more but when I started the book I couldn’t put it down. I felt for Adele, as she had mixed feelings about going back to her father’s house.  How do you deal with such an embarrassing situation from your teenage years and go back to where it all started? She was a girl with a crush when she confessed her feelings for Pete.  What she did think about is how Pete and her father would react.  Obviously she thought it seemed like a good idea at the time.
