About Layback

Not too long ago, I had one goal: Win an Olympic Gold Medal but an injury took me out of the running for the Ladies Figure Skating competition at the last Olympic Games. Nancy Kerrigan was grandfathered in. I was not.

Translation: I was disqualified. DQ’d. I was out in the cold on my keister.

But when an offer to fill a spot on a pairs team lands in my lap, I take it. It seems like an answered prayer—that is until a competitor is found brutally murdered in her room at the competitor’s village and my partner is the number one suspect.

I’m going to have to take matters into my own hands. Again. Sweet Kristi Yamaguchi, save me from overly cocky men.

My name is Sophia Eleonore Dubois and holy mother of Dorothy Hamill my life is still complicated . . .

It’s not what you think

“Sweet Kristi Yamaguchi’s daisy dress,” I whisper more to myself than anyone else. “You have got to be kidding me.”

“This is not what you think,” Luc says and there is a note of panic in his voice that makes me backup a step.

“Really?” I ask as my anger rises up to the surface. What kind of bubble headed moron does he think I am? I wasn’t born yesterday. “Because it looks to me like you are standing over the dead body of our competitor.”

“Okay,” Luc says hesitantly. “It is what it looks like.”

“Darn it, Luc!” I snap. “How could you?”

“What?” he says surprised. “You can’t possibly think that I did this?”

“Well, I don’t really know what to think right now, now do I?” I bite back.

“Sophie, please,” he pleads. “You’ve got to believe me.”

“This looks bad, Luc,” I tell him. “Really, really bad.”

“I know.” He lets out a frustrated sigh and pushes a hand through his thick hair.

Luc and I stand there, facing each other off, with Layla’s body sprawled over a chair between us. I’m not sure which is more disconcerting, the ropes tied around her nude body or the ones tied around her neck.

“Please don’t run from me. I’m not going to hurt you.”

“I’m not going to lie, Luc, this scares me,” I admit.

“I know. Me too.”

He sighs again and pulls his hand through his hair. The silence between us speaks volumes. This was supposed to be my second chance at the Games. My last one as a singles competitor was taken from me by my Stepmonster and her evil henchman when they broke my leg. But when the opportunity to replace half of a pairs team came up, I jumped on it. Now, it seems like I should have paid more attention to the fine print.

“You have to believe me,” he pleads with those big, brown puppy dog eyes, the ones that have probably gotten him out of more scrapes than he deserves.

I let out a sigh and admit, “I do.”
“Thank fuck,” Luc blurts out. “But what are we going to do now?”

I wish like heck that I knew myself. This is more than a little complication.

“I don’t know.” What I do know is that my mostly on again boyfriend, former professional hockey player and current San Diego PD homicide detective, Kane Fucking Green, is not going to be thrilled when he hears what happened.

Kane is going to be so mad—he’s going to be pissed—excuse my french.

My name is Sophia Eleanore Dubois, daughter of a United States Senator, still an Olympic hopeful figure skater, and holy mother of Dorothy Hamill, my life is still complicated . . .

About the Author

Jennifer is a thirty something lover of words, all words: the written, the spoken, the sung (even poorly), the sweet, the funny, and even the four letter variety. She is a native of San Diego, California where she grew up reading the Brownings and Rebecca with her mother and Clifford and the Dog who Glowed in the Dark with her dad, much to her mother’s dismay.

Jennifer is a graduate of California State University San Marcos where she studied Criminology and Justice Studies. She is also an Alpha Xi Delta.

10 years ago, she was swept off her feet by her very own sailor. Today, they are happily married and the parents of a 8 year old and 6 year old twins. She can often be found in East Texas on the soccer fields, drawing with her children, or reading. Jennifer is convinced that if she puts her fitbit on one of the dogs, she might finally make her step goals. She loves a great romance, an alpha hero, and lots and lots of laughter.
