Sean felt his arm pull back before he could think to stop it, and then the skin around his knuckles was tightening, and with one furious swing, his fist exploded into the side of Hunter’s left eye.

Hunter’s hands rushed to his face just as his knees buckled and the blood around his cheekbone started to pour. “Fuck, man!” He fell to the dock.

Kat ran toward him.

Ashley ran in after her.

This wasn’t how it was supposed to go down. Sean looked on in horror as the women tried to pry Hunter’s fingers from his face so they could examine the damage. They looked at his busted eye, and then back and Sean, and then back to the eye. This wasn’t what he’d intended to do. It wasn’t Sean’s plan.

“Fuck, man!” Hunter yelled again as he stumbled up to his feet. He let his hands drop to his sides and everyone took a good long look at what Sean had done.

It was hard to make out the injury in the moonlight, but not impossible. Hunter’s eye was red, the socket soon to be bruised and the broken skin beneath it was a bloody mess. But it was a standard punch, probably no permanent damage incurred.

Sean was relieved to see that he didn’t seem to have broken anything, butwas no less ashamed. He hadn’t thrown a punch since ninth grade, and even then—after he caught Bryan Alpo trying to steal his bike—he couldn’t believe he had it in him. There may have been times in life when a punch was justified, but that didn’t mean all men possessed such an impulse. Sean always thought he wasn’t the punching type.

Hunter stared at Sean, and everyone held their breaths. Would he punch back? If he wanted to, Sean wouldn’t block it. That wouldn’t be right. He would let Hunter take a big, premeditated swing as he stood there. He wanted it now because this was almost worse than a punch. Hunter just stared in anger, like he was considering every revenge possibility, and the longer he stared, the more violent his busted eyes looked.

Just fucking punch me, Sean thought.

Hunter drew a wet breath. “I’m not sleeping with Kat,” he whispered. “I’m not.”

Sean looked at Kat, who had been watching him. He believed her. He believed both of them now. He turned back to Hunter and suddenly felt more horrible than he had ever felt in his whole life. They really weren’t sleeping together. Something was going on with his girlfriend, but it was clear now that it wasn’t an affair. Silence fell.

Rip spun away. His lungs emptied of air as he struggled to understand the betrayal of a man he’d trusted. The late afternoon sunlight streamed through the oversized bay windows, wrapping the room in golden light. He watched the effect the sunbeams had on the office. Swirling tendrils of pain and emptiness ripped at his insides, fighting to get out, but he forced them back, his many years of discipline winning over his temptation to let the emotions run rampant.

Odd that as angry as he was, he felt the bitterness more intently; that the past year as Edward’s right-hand man and friend meant nothing. Rip couldn’t take over the family business because he wasn’t family. All his work, care, and sacrifice to bring the winery back from bankruptcy didn’t matter. Blood mattered.

Once again, Rip found himself chasing a prize that danced just out of reach, like the shadow chased the elusive light of the sun.

“Before signing the acceptance offer, you’ll need to know some of the obligations. There will be traveling, often on short notice. I expect you to always be available. “I wanted to let you know that I’m going to do a media tour to talk about my experience as a living donor,” Leo says.

Surprised by his announcement, I emit an involuntary “Oh!”

The royal family is constantly in the news. From the king’s work in parliament and the queen’s charitable efforts to Prince Leo’s diplomatic trips abroad and Prince Marco’s latest antics, there’s plenty of fodder for the media.

“People are curious, and I’d rather they hear the real story from me instead of”—he makes air quotes with both hands—“an unnamed source close to the prince. Who knows? Maybe I can persuade more people to be living donors.”

“That’d be amazing if you could, Leo. There aren’t enough donors, living or deceased.”

He leans forward. “How would you feel about participating in the media tour ... coming forward as a transplant recipient?”

It takes a moment for his words to register. When they do, my whole body recoils. “I don’t know...”

I trail off, unable to articulate my feelings. If my donor liver came from a normal person instead of Leo, I wouldn’t hesitate to tell everyone my story. But Leo’s royal blood—his position as the future king of Alsania—complicates things. The thought of being stalked by paparazzi makes it hard for me to breathe.

I shrug uncomfortably. “I need some time to think about it. Is that okay?”

He drops his hand from my knee and rises from the chair. His broad chest blocks my view of the rest of the room, and I have to tilt my head back to see his eyes.

To my surprise, he moves closer and cups his hands around my face. His skin is hot and supple like the leather seats in a sports car in the summer. He strokes the pads of his thumbs across my cheekbones, and that simple touch spreads heat throughout my body.

“Look at you.” His voice is deep and husky. “Your cheeks are so pink.”

One of his thumbs cruises down to my mouth and skims across my bottom lip. “And your lips...”

I must be having an out-of-body experience. Or maybe I’m in a medically induced coma and this is just a hallucination. I don’t know how else to explain what’s happening.

“What about my lips?”

“They’re pink too,” he whispers, “like those peonies you dropped.”

I wrap my hands around his wrists, not to push him away but to keep him close. “Leo...”

A groan rumbles in his chest, and that rough sound creates an ache between my legs. Sliding his hand into my hair, he palms my head and brings his mouth to mine.
