EXCERPT

Doug nodded, his lower face smeared with blood. Yes, sir.
Good. I pointed at the crates. Now, wipe the blood off your face and get the rest of these unloaded. And make sure you clean up after yourself. We dont need a blood trail. I threw a scathing glance at the rest of the crew, whod done nothing but watch. That goes for all of you.
They all jumped into motion like obedient worker ants, including Doug. No one spoke, but they exchanged silent glances as they moved the crates out of the container and into the truck that would carry the goods to the old ware- house outside Steel Row where we stored our inventory. Id busted their buddys nose, but in this world? That earned you respect.
They wouldnt mess with me again.
Chris, my best friend and another lieutenant, came over to me, crossing his arms as he got closer. He watched me with an appreciative light in his brown eyes. Chris was the one exception to my no-trust rule. Hed gotten me into this world, against all odds, and had been there for me when Id needed him most. You handled that well.
It was sick that beating some dude up was a way to earn praise in my career field, but it was what it was. This life was the only life I ever would know. And that was ne by me. He deserved it for being a dick.
Thats because none of these guys take you seriously. Chris lowered his head, his brown hair hiding his eyes from me, and studied his nails. His green T-shirt pulled at his muscular arms, and his ink spread all the way down to his wrist. Hed been in the gang since hed been a teen, like me. Hed joined because his pa had been a member, so this life had been carved out for him from the moment he came into this world.
Those werent my reasons for joining.
Hell, I wouldnt know my father if I passed him on the street. When my mother was alive, God rest her soul, Id doubted if shed even known who he was, either.
Yeah, well, thats their mistake. I straightened my sleeves. Not mine.
He looked over at the crew, who definitely had a new sense of urgency in their movements. Maybe because youve been in lockup the past two years. They didnt know who you were, besides the fact that you got put away for assault, and now youre here, bossing them around on the docks.
Chris and I had always been tight. When Id been doing time, hed come to visit me twice a month. Kept me posted on the happenings in the real world. Hed visited more than my actual brother had, but that was no surprise. Id always looked out for Scotty, but Scotty wasnt exactly the sentimental type of guy who put a priority on family visits. And that was fine, too. I hadnt been planning on being here at all. This isnt my department. I came because of the damn ATF. And Scotty has some chick on the line.
Since when do you care what Scotty wants when it comes to this shit?
I shrugged. Since I spent some time behind bars . . . Scotty and I arent as close as we once were. But that doesnt mean Im going to let him play chicken with the feds. Hes too damn cocky for his own good.
So hes off fucking some girl while you stick your neck out for him? Like usual? Chris rolled his eyes.
I moved my shoulders, wanting nothing more than to get the hell out of here. They were almost finished, so Id be free any minute now. Free. Funny choice of words. Id never be free. Not really. The closest I got to free was when I walked down the Freedom Trail. Yeah. Basically.
Youve got to stop treating him like a kid. Hes twenty- four now. Chris looked at me, studying me too close. Chris was the only one who caught glimpses of the real me. Hes not the little boy you need to protect anymore. He can take care of himself. A little too well, maybe.
Whats that supposed to mean? I asked.
Nothing, man. Nothing at all. He shuffled his feet and stared at the guys as they did a final check of the shipping container. I heard you almost got taken down inside. What happened?
I shrugged. Someone jumped me from behind on the way out of lunch. I fought him off long enough to keep my life, but I didnt get a clear look at his face before the guards dragged him away. A buddy on the inside said he looked like a new guy but couldnt point him out. It all happened too fast.
You almost died.
Laughing, I scratched my head. Yeah, well, I didnt, did I? Good thing Im out, safe and sound, now, I drawled.
Chris rocked back on his heels. You suspect something, dont you?
Dont you? I looked at Chris. You cant bullshit a bullshitter. I see it in your eyes. You know somethings up. Maybe I do. Maybe I dont. But a smart man never talks. Chris dropped his hands at his sides and whistled through his teeth. As he walked away, he said over his shoulder, Not
in this world.
Not even for his blood brother?
Chris paused, his broad shoulders tight. Not even then.
Glad to see you havent forgotten me, brother, I said, pressing my fingers over the old scar in my palm. One of the two Chris and I had made all those years ago on the railroad tracks behind my home. Ma had been pissed at me for deliberately cutting myself. If itd gotten infected, it would have meant medical bills we couldnt afford. Id gone to bed without dinner that night. Have a good night.
Chris spun on his heel and came back, his cheeks red and rage in his eyes. You know nothing. Nothing. You werent here, asshole. You were gone, and the whole thing went to shit. You left me to fend for myself in the damn Sons of Steel Row all by myself.
I cocked a brow. Excuse me for getting arrested.
Ha-ha, so funny, fuckwad. Chris clenched his fists. You want me to tell you what I think? You want it that bad?
I forced myself to shrug. If you feel so inclined, sure.
I think someone is putting all his players into motion, and it all started the second we got word that you got parole. Chris looked me up and down, his nostrils flaring. And I suggest, brother, that you watch your back.
I held my hands out at my sides, forcing a carefree grin . . . even though I felt like anything but. I always do. It would take a ghost to sneak up on me.
Chris shook his head. Dont be so damn cocky. It just might just be your downfall.
Or it just might be my protection.
Whatever, man, Chris said, locking eyes with me. Whatever.
As he walked away, I dropped the grin and fisted my hands. Thanks.
Chris didnt say anything. Just walked up to the newly loaded truck, the men in either the cab or their own vehicles. He tapped the back of the truck to signify that all was well, and the truck took off. Chris followed behind it in his car, the others falling in line behind him. Hed make sure everything got to the warehouse, unpacked, and inventoried. I stared at the convoy as it disappeared from sight, then turned around and left, making sure to keep my steps whistled The Star-Spangled Banner.
No matter what I did, I couldnt show my certainty that Chris was right. Id been thinking the same thing, so hearing it straight from the mouth of the only man I trusted in this world? Yeah, that pretty much answered my unasked questions. It seemed clear as day that this was an inside job, and that meant . . .
Someone in Steel Row wanted me dead.

SWEET AS SUGAR. SEXY AS SIN . . .

Carly Taylor is pretty sure she's dreaming. It's not possible that Sam Weiss - rock star god and sexy hotness personified - is actually in her bakery. This sort of thing never happens in the too-small town of Haven. Or to her. And being stranded in a secluded mountain cabin with the deliciously decadent Sam during an ice storm? Now there's just the two of them, a roaring fire, lots of food and drink, and a sizzling attraction - one that just might make Carly do the unexpected. For one night, she'll live the fantasy. Excerpt

Carly Taylor crouched behind the display case, peeking out between the blueberry muffins and the orange-cranberry scones. A man stood just inside the door, baseball cap pulled low, talking on his phone. He’d never come into A Piece of Cake Bakery before. And it was probably just her imagination playing tricks on her, but she could swear it was Sam Weiss. As in, one of the hottest rock stars in America.

Carly peeked at him again from behind the scones, then leaned over to pick up the napkin she’d pretended to drop to give herself an excuse to snoop. Sam Weiss probably lived in Hollywood. There was no way he’d be standing here—sans entourage—in the doorway of her little bakery in Haven, North Carolina, a town in the Smoky Mountains so small that it barely registered as a blip on the map.

Nope.

She was daydreaming, as usual. She’d listened to Sam’s latest album, Renegade, this morning while she baked, and now she was imagining him here in her shop.
“What are you doing down there, Carly?”

Carly looked up to see her grandma, Marlene, peering at her over the glass countertop. “I, ah, dropped something.”

“Lost in your thoughts again?” her grandmother asked with a wide smile.

“Something like that.” Carly climbed to her feet, clutching the dropped napkin.

Her grandmother’s friend Dixie stood beside her, her blue eyes twinkling mischievously. “Daydreaming about that handsome young man over by the door, I bet.”

Carly resisted the urge to glance in his direction but felt herself grinning anyway. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Well, we’re on our way out,” her grandmother said. “Aqua aerobics to work off those muffins.”

“Worth every calorie,” Dixie added.

The two women waved as they headed for the door, walking past the mystery hottie as they left. Carly’s grandma had created this bakery and ran it happily for over twenty years. She’d retired six months ago, handing over the reins to Carly.

But owning A Piece of Cake had been anything but a piece of cake for Carly so far. Profits were down, way down. She needed to get her head out of the clouds—and her mind off certain rock star look-a-likes—before she ran her grandmother’s pride and joy straight into the ground.

With a heavy sigh, she tossed the napkin she still held into the trash.

 “What do you recommend?”

She looked up and into the blue eyes of Sam Weiss—or his non-celebrity twin. Lookalike or not, he was ridiculously hot, and she was a dork because her cheeks were burning. He wore a leather jacket over a black T-shirt and dark-washed jeans. But his eyes…wow. He still wore the baseball cap pulled low, with a sinful amount of stubble on his cheeks that all screamed Rock God.

“If you have a sweet tooth, you should, um, try a cinnamon bun. They’re my specialty.”

He leaned in, resting his elbows on the counter. “I do have a sweet tooth, especially for a pretty woman who bakes. This your place?”

That voice. Sweet Jesus. It was smooth as caramel with just a hint of a southern twang, and she’d know it anywhere. Sam Weiss is in my shop! And did he just hit on me?

“Yes.” She cleared her throat because why did she suddenly sound like Minnie Mouse? “Yes, this is my shop.”

A slow smile curved his lips. “A pretty woman who bakes and owns her own business. I like you already.”

“Thanks.” She really shouldn’t keep staring, but whoa, her brain was short-circuiting because…Sam Weiss. In her shop. Looking like sex on a stick, and he smelled pretty awesome too, like some kind of expensive cologne. Yum.

“I’ll try one of your cinnamon buns…” He paused, glancing down for the nametag she never wore since everyone in town already knew her name.

“Carly,” she said, still sounding a bit like she’d inhaled helium.

“Carly.” He met her gaze again, and the sound of her name on his lips made her knees wobble. “And a coffee, black.”

“You got it,” she said with a smile that felt weird on her face, and God, why was she being such an idiot? “For here?”

He nodded, watching her intently as if he’d figured out by all her bumbling dorkiness that she’d recognized him because, really, how could he not? At least he looked amused instead of annoyed.

She dished up a cinnamon bun and a cup of coffee without dropping anything or making a further fool of herself, and he paid in cash—denying her the thrill of seeing what name might be on his credit card. He probably went by some cool alter ego when he traveled anyway.

“Thanks, Carly,” he said in that butter-soft voice that made her feel all hot and fluttery inside. Then he leaned in, winked, and pressed a finger to his lips, making a silent, “sh.”

And oh my God, he knew she knew. Which meant it was definitely him. And she grinned like an idiot while he walked to a table in the back and sat, long legs stretched in front of him. A muffled beep from the direction of the kitchen told her she’d forgotten to take the last batch of butterscotch pecan sandies out of the oven.

So much for keeping her mind on business this morning. But at this exact moment—her eyes still on Sam Weiss—she didn’t care. Not even a little bit.

Bestselling author Devon Hartford brings you another scorching hot and scandalous standalone romance.

SOME SECRETS ARE TOO HARD TO KEEP

The night the EMTs rolled Lion Maxwell into my ER turned my life upside down.
Although he was bloody and battered from defending his title as the WMAA’s reigning cruiserweight champion, his cocky grin lit up the room.
And every cell in my body.
Our fiery chemistry was off the charts.
The ER staff sensed it.
Lion’s entourage and his drooling groupies sensed it too.
If the two of us had been alone, I might have done something entirely unprofessional and completely unethical right there in the exam room. But I was his attending physician. A sexual or romantic relationship with him was grounds for my termination or worse, revoking my medical license. I wouldn’t risk my career on a moment of passion. It didn’t stop that arrogant caveman from doing everything he could to get me into his hospital bed.
After denying his advances for weeks, the last thing I expected were the wild nights he would be spending in my bed.
It was supposed to be nothing more than a secret fling.
I knew it couldn’t last.
He was still my patient.
What we were doing was wrong.
If anyone found out, it could ruin my life.
But we couldn’t let go.
We were bound to each other on some primal level that consumed us.
Sometimes love is tragic.
Sometimes two people aren’t meant to be together.
But sometimes, two people overcome all adversity and build a love that lasts forever.
I knew deep in my heart that Lion Maxwell could be my happily ever after.
As long as we kept our love a secret.
I wish I’d known that some secrets are too hard to keep…
