I approached Paul at the helm. He handed me a beer and gave me a sly half smile.

“Thought you were leaving?” His half smile morphed into a full-blown shit- eating grin.

“Yeah, me too.” I knocked back half the beer in two large gulps.

“She got you, didn’t she?”

“Yeah,” I grinned and nodded, “she did.”

Paul guffawed. “I knew it. I told Nadine when we met you two, ‘That boy doesn’t know what hit him!’” He chuckled once more and clinked our bottles together. “She’ll take good care of you. That’s a good woman. I can tell.”

“The best,” I said.

“Well, I don’t know about the best. You have met my wife?” He grinned again, and we both laughed.

“So how did you and Nadine meet?”

Paul grinned and took another sip of his beer.

“I used to work with her brother down at the shipyard. She was the most beautiful looking girl I’d ever seen, but she was a skinny little thing back then and mean as a snake. She did not fancy me. Every day when she would drop her brother off at work I would say, ‘Good Morning, Nadine,’ and she would roll her eyes and drive away. One day, her brother forgot his lunch, and she came to drop it off. Now, I never ate much for lunch, a piece of chicken between two slices of bread with some pepper sauce. She took one look at my pitiful lunch, screwed her face up and walked away. The next day, her brother gave me a bag.” Paul’s face spread into a wide grin. “Inside was a container with peas and rice, curried goat and a slice of coconut bread. Best meal I’ve ever had.” He laughed.

“So, she talked to you after that?”

“No,” Paul laughed as if I’d made the most absurd suggestion,” but,” He held up an index finger and wagged it at me. “That’s when I knew I had a chance.”

We laughed again.

“So, I know what happens when you cross a Bajan woman. What happens when you try to leave one?”

“I don’t know, man,” Paul shrugged and took another sip of his beer, “I’ve never tried.”

Release Blitz for for The Bratva's Bride by Jane Henry

Bratva life is simple:

You steal from the brotherhood, you pay with your life.

But the thief is a woman, and she’s too beautiful to die.

My wedding band will be her collar.

Our vows will be her shackles.

She will be my captive bride.

“What?” she asks, frowning. I don’t like her tone of voice and wonder what’s gotten into her. “You know I know some Russian,” she says. “Don’t you? Tell him I’m ready.”

She grows too free with her speech.

“She’ll be ready,” I tell them, though my gaze is fixed on her.

“I think you should nail Amronov’s wife,” Vladak tells me with a smirk. “And she’ll make sure you get what you need.” Calina tenses.

I scowl at him, and no one laughs. Fucking the Prime Minister’s wife is a good way of getting assassinated.

“Why not?” Filip asks. Maksym sits with his arms crossed, and says nothing. He was the one that alerted me to the fact that Amaranov’s wife asked for me, but he doesn’t approve of this plan. I don’t like it either. There’s something unsettling about it.

I watch Calina’s knuckles whiten when she fists them in her lap.

She heard the other men suggesting I sleep with Amronov’s wife and she doesn’t like it.

“I have better means of getting what I want,” I tell them and Calina has the gall to snort derisively.

“Perhaps she isn’t sufficiently trained,” I tell them, a clear warning to her.

She lifts her face and juts out her chin. “Sufficiently trained?” she snaps.

The room grows quiet. My men expect her to obey me, and she’s anything but obedient right now.

“Enough, Calina,” I warn, but she doesn’t heed my admonition.

“I don’t know,” she says, her voice rising. “Maybe you need to snap a metal collar around my neck. Take me for a walk so I can pee in your garden. Perhaps if you—”

But she doesn’t get any further. When I rise from my chair, panic flits across her features and she bites her lip. She knows she’s in trouble. She knows she’s crossed a line. What she doesn’t know is how badly I want to punish her with an audience. How my cock aches with the knowledge of what she’s pushed me to do. It seems last night’s lesson didn’t make the impact it should have. I shouldn’t have given her the attention afterward. Or perhaps she simply needs a further demonstration.

I take her firmly by the arm, yank her to standing, and haul her bodily over the table while my men watch in stoic silence. Papers flutter to the floor. No one says a word. None are amused. They know what’s at stake.

None even flinch when I slam my palm across her ass. They’re an audience of soldiers who would lose respect for me if I didn’t do just this. If I didn’t teach her a lesson in obedience for all to see. If I’ve taught them well, any one of them would do what I have to do now.

“Demyan,” she protests. “Please! I’m sorry,” But I ignore her complaints and push her flat across the table with a firm palm on her lower back. I crook a finger to Maksym, since he’s the largest, strongest man in our company.

With a scowl, he rises. Though Maksym has a tender spot, he knows what’s on the line. He’d be the first one to tell me to punish her, so when I give my order he doesn’t flinch.

“Hold her down,” I instruct.

Every pair of eyes in the restaurant was on us as we were led to our table for dinner.

Probably not every pair, but God, it felt that way.

“Is it just me,” I asked over the top of my menu, “or is everyone staring at us?”

Royce was indifferent. “They’re staring at you.”

His statement rattled me. “Why?”

“Because you’re here with me.” His gaze never lifted to mine, like he couldn’t be bothered. “Or more likely, because you’re fucking gorgeous. Who knows?”

Breath halted in my lungs. “You can’t just say shit like that.”

The leather-bound menu holder dropped onto the table with a thud, and I was met with the full power of Royce’s irritated stare. “That you’re beautiful? You are. Get over it.”

Dismay twisted my lips into a frown. “Please, don’t. I don’t need bullshit lines from someone like you.”

“It’s not a line, and . . . someone like me?” More annoyance darted through his eyes, but intrigue too. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

How was I going to put it into words? “You’re a ‘haver.’ I mean, you could have any woman in this room if you wanted, and probably some of the guys too. You’re young, hot, and filthy rich.”

His irritation vanished. It was replaced with an arrogant expression that said none of this was news to him. I pushed forward, gathering steam.

“Me?” I said. “I’m a ‘have-not.’ I’m sure you didn’t intend for it to happen, but when you said I was a nobody, you made it true. No one will touch me.”

“I touched you.”

He was immune to my scorching glare. “You wanted to know why I was still a virgin last year. Well, there’s your answer. You’re the reason, Royce. Nobody would be caught dead with me.”

He considered the accusation I’d lobbed at him. “You’re wrong,” he said finally. “I was aware what was going to happen. It’s exactly why I said it.”

My head turned into a void. “What?”

He leaned over the table to ensure he had my full attention. “I saw you at the bar with your sister that night. You were swaying to the music, all happy, and pretty, and it pissed me off.

My father had already laid out plans for me. I was supposed to be with Emily, but that wasn’t what I wanted.”

I clenched the menu in my hands. I sensed where he was going, but I couldn’t wrap my head around it. My heart chugged along, thumping loudly in my ears.

“So, yeah. I knew you were behind me when I called you a nobody. I did it on purpose, because I couldn’t stand you with anyone else. I wanted you for myself.”

“Oh, my God.” My body flushed hot, although I didn’t know if it was with anger or excitement, or a deadly combination of the two.

I licked my lips, turned on by the torment in his face. No one had ever wanted me like this. It was like he didn’t even care what was at stake, like wanting me wasn’t a choice.

My mind flashed back to the first day of class when I told him I would’ve given him everything. At the time, I’d been teasing him, having a bit of harmless fun. But it didn’t feel so harmless now. Now that I realized I meant it. Now that I realized I didn’t just want to get naked for this guy. I wanted to strip down to my soul.

His eyes searched mine as he clenched his jaw, holding his tension there for ages. It was like time stood still. We didn’t move. We didn’t breathe. We didn’t blink. Soon, the thundering rain softened slightly, and a few minutes later, it let up a little more. Still, we stayed put.

I wondered what he was thinking, but nothing could’ve improved on the silence between us just then. It was perfect, delirious. Besides, I didn’t have a coherent thought in my head. All I had was a bunch of feelings, and those were even more impossible to interpret. They wouldn’t even hold still. It was like they were exploding inside me like fireworks one after another, a chain reaction of punctuated bliss and paralyzing sexual frustration.

The twenty-two bus pulled up to the shelter as the rain stopped, and Kellan waved the driver away when he opened the door.

“We should’ve gotten on,” I said, smiling as it pulled away. “See where it might’ve taken us.”

“I thought we were happy here.” His crazy blue eyes sparkled. “I was thinking we should never leave.”

“It would be easy to invite friends over,” I said. “Living right on the bus route.”

“No. No friends. No visitors.”

I scrunched my nose. “Just us? At this bus stop? Forever?”

He squeezed the back of his neck and looked me up and down like I was magic. Like I’d enchanted him, and he never wanted to come out from under my spell. “We could do worse.”

Joseph watched helplessly as James moved from his place against the far wall toward a boy on a chair on the opposite side of the room. A boy who had slim knives embedded in his arms and legs—a human pin cushion.

Joseph shivered as he recalled his brother’s expression a moment ago as he’d sat and stared at the knives he had sliced into the boy’s flesh. James, the sadistic voyeur of his own work. Joseph’s nervous eyes landed on his brother’s target. The boy was bound with ropes, and a washcloth was stuffed into his mouth, silencing his cries.

Luke.

Fear flooded Joseph’s body. Luke, the boy who had been intent on bullying James since the age of eight. The boy who would spit at James’s feet when they walked by. The boy who call him weird, a goth, a psychopath who rarely spoke. His taunts were endless. Joseph didn’t think the verbal bullets had ever hit their target . . . until he’d found a pad of paper hidden underneath James’s bed. A pad of paper showing in graphic detail what James wanted to do to Luke.

Tie him up.

Cut his flesh.

Exsanguinate his body.

Then drink the blood down.

“They’re just fantasy, right?” Joseph asked James when he returned from detention. Joseph held up the drawings. Page after page of pain and despair and cruelty.

James walked slowly to Joseph and ran his hand down the open page of the pad, delicately running his fingertip over the pencil image of Luke’s slit throat. “It’s a promise,” James said, with no shame in his voice. “Each page is what will happen to Luke.” James finally met his older brother’s eyes. “I’m just waiting for the perfect time.”

From that day on Joseph made sure Luke never got too close to James, for fear of what his younger brother would do. Because Joseph believed every word his brother had said.

The truth was, Joseph knew that someday, if he wasn’t stopped, James would do something so terrible he wouldn’t be able to come back from it.

And Joseph had no idea how to cure James. He didn’t know how to heal his little brother of the wretchedness that had lodged itself into his soul. He prayed for a miracle he knew would never come.

Joseph’s heart pounded as James held up another knife. His brother’s torso was bare, the scars from his frequent self-mutilation clear to see, white roads of flesh mapping the veins that ran under his skin. Veins that carried the blood James so desperately craved; nightly, once safe in their room, he would slice them open and lick the falling drops as they ran in crimson rivulets down his arms.

Joseph thrashed on the bed, fighting the binds James must have placed him in while he slept. “James, listen to me,” Joseph said as he helplessly watched his brother slowly push his blade into Luke’s shoulder. Luke’s chair almost fell as he screamed into the washcloth, the fabric absorbing his cry. But James didn’t even flinch. Joseph’s stomach clenched when the blood started to pour from Luke’s shoulder as James carefully extracted the blade.

Eleven. That’s all James was. Eleven years old, yet thought only of blood . . . worse, even . . . thought only about the consumption of blood.
